The Irresistible Allure of Deutzia
By Kerry Ann Mendez
Who can resist a compact, drought tolerant shrub that smothers itself with spring flowers and then presents a color encore in fall with its striking burgundy-purple foliage? And did I mention it is also deer resistant?
Now in Pink
Deutzia 'Yuki Cherry Blossom' is the first pink flowering Deutzia (white flowers have long been the standard). Actually, the flowers are more a combination of pink and white, which makes them all the more striking. The lovely arching stems add to the plant's allure. 'Yuki Cherry Snowflake' mounds to 24" and does best in full to part sun. If pruning is needed, do so right after they finish blooming. 'Yuki Snowflake' is similar to 'Yuki Cherry Blossom', except the flowers are shimmering white and the fall foliage isn't quite as striking. Both of these workhorses are excellent for containers.
A Wonderful Groundcover
'Yuki Cherry Blossom' and 'Yuki Snowflake' make unique ground covers when massed, since arching stem tips will root where they touch the ground. I have seen breathtaking displays of these Deutzia on slopes.
Wait, There's More!
Not to be overlooked, Deutzia 'Chardonnay Pearls' and 'Creme Fraiche' showcase flashy foliage in addition to pearly white flowers. 'Chardonnay Pearls' sports golden-yellow leaves while 'Creme Fraiche' is soft green with creamy white margins.
