Growing Your Own Herbs
If you've always wanted to enjoy the aromas and unique tastes of your own fresh herbs at home and in your dining, growing your own could be the solution. Before you rush out and start choosing plants take into consideration these helpful tips from our professionals to make sure you get off on the right foot.
Location, Location, Location!
Herbs appreciate a situation with at least five hours of strong, preferably afternoon sun. The ideal soil would be a sandy loam with the addition of a good amount of organic matter and a neutral pH. If you have clay loam, the addition of some coarse sand, organic matter and lime will suffice.
Containers
If you don't have the garden space or the energy to improve your soil, herbs can be grown in containers such as strawberry pots that can be filled with a good potting soil. These pots allow you to grow a wide variety of plants, which is important when starting your first herb garden.
Most perennial herbs require very little additional water once established, but if you're using containers be sure to water often, especially in the height of summer.
