How to Extend the Life of Your Cut Flowers
By Susanne Kane
There's nothing like a vase of fresh flowers to add life to a room. Whether you've received a bouquet from a florist or cut them from your own garden, flowers are a great way to add color and fragrance to your home. While most cut flowers last for about one week, there are a few easy steps you can take to increase their longevity and keep them looking prettier for longer.
- Use a Clean Vase: Re-wash the vase every 2-3 days to prevent bacterial growth.
- Trim the Stems: Each time you clean the vase, trim the stems with a sharp knife at a 45-degree angle to help the flowers absorb water better.
- Remove Excess Leaves: Ensure no leaves are below the water line, as they can cause rot and bacteria.
- Feed Your Flowers: Cut flowers benefit from a touch of sugar for nourishment and an acidic ingredient such as aspirin to help them absorb water. You may also use a sprinkle of flower food.
- Change the Water: Replace the water every day to keep your flowers hydrated and protected from bacteria.
- Keep Flowers Cool: Keep flowers away from heat sources; the cooler the room, the better.
