Jump Start Spring with Cheerful Violas
By Kerry Ann Mendez
Perennials are now available at Estabrook's! While we offer hundreds of different varieties and many are already blooming, it's tough to beat perennial violas for their brilliant early spring color.
Early Spring Blooms
Violas are one of the first bloomers to burst through the spring flower gate. You can't help but smile when you see their cheerful "faces". There has been a lot of breeding to improve winter hardiness as well as heat tolerance to encourage non-stop blooms spring through fall. Of course, deadheading and weekly liquid fertilizer applications will enhance the show. If you choose to eat their edible flowers, we recommend organic fertilizers such as Neptune's Harvest.
Recommended Varieties
The Halo series is getting rave reviews from gardeners. They offer large fragrant flowers in a range of colors that capture the eye and are ideal for containers, window boxes and gardens.
We are also carrying other popular picks including 'Etain'. Violas like nutrient-rich, moisture retentive soil in full sun to part shade. Hardiness ranges from Zones 4-9 depending on the cultivar.
