Vernonia (Ironweed)

Ironweed is a common name often given to a many different weeds, however it is most correctly given to members of the Vernonia genus. The ironweeds are perennials with showy purple flowers and are given the name because of their stout stems that often persist throughout the winter.

This plant's fluffy haze of deep purple flowers is often covered by a parade of butterflies in August and September while other beneficial insects feed on the nectar and pollen. This lovely clumping native adapts well to any moist to normal soil.
